Much REJOICING! I don't think I could have waited till April to see the final eps of BSG. Who am I kidding, of course I would have waited - but bless Sci-Fi for not making their loyal fans go thru that!
I'm rather surprised you linked to the Cracked article, as I found it way off the mark about River Tam, and therefore Firefly. Avoiding the essay I want to write, I'll just say that everyone needs protecting at times, everyone has demons in their past. But the strong, whether male OR female, overcome it - and that's exactly what River did at the end of Serenity.
Ovrthinxit, actually you're right about River. I did disagree with them on that except for the part where they said her fighting skills usually kicked in at not very helpful times. But I do think River was a strong character. Over the years, though, my one complaint with Whedon's female characters is that at times, he'll weaken them for no particular reason. Like Anya on Buffy. Strong female character...to a point...and then she always kind of got put back in her place. I do think the women on Firefly were better defined, though, and were allowed to stay strong throughout the series and into Serenity.
