Friday Odds & Ends: Hobbit rumors, Eve Myles and contact lenses for animals

+ Casting rumors are floating around for "The Hobbit" with James McAvoy, Daniel Radcliffe and David Tennant all mentioned for the role of Bilbo Baggins. I'm about to utter a nerd blaspheme here but I kind of hate the idea of Tennant as Baggins. It's not that I don't think he'd be great, it's just that I...well...I don't like "The Hobbit." There, I've said it! I can't help it. I've never liked that book. Anyway, word is that the casting might be announced at Comic-Con.

+ Did you see this article about Harry Potter fans forming their own version of Dumbledore's Army to raise money and just generally do good things in support of some very worthy causes. Thanks to Minerva for submitting the link!

+ Here's a nifty new interview with Joss Whedon on "Dr. Horrible"'s Emmy nomination and various and sundry other things.

+ Speaking of interviews, here's a fairly extensive and kinda funny chat with Eve Myles, talking about Torchwood, Captain Jack and where she keeps her vases.

+ And finally, how cool is this? A German firm is making custom contact lenses for animals.

TY for being honest about "The Hobbit", I agree it is not my fav. I seriously have a tough time seeing David Tennant in this role, I agree he'd be good - hello he's David Tennant, but somehow it just doesn't feel "right".

Also not sure it would be a good move for Daniel Radcliff, but then again Hugo Weaving was in how many big iconic movies and he made it all happen so... as for McAvoy???

"I'd be doing it now, but Fox forgot to cancel my show"

Hah! Joss is awesome.

You are most welcome :)
I shall continue to submit appropriate nerdy news when I find it.

'sabout time they started working on The Hobbit. If it's anywhere near as good as LOTR, I'll be waiting in line.

Gotta love Eve Myles...I sure do.

And Joss is Boss. He is the man!! I'm so happy and really hope that he wins.

David Tennant's too TALL to be Bilbo Baggins fer goodness sakes!! They'd have to cut his legs off at the thighs!

Bilbo is supposed to be an unlikely hero -- he's middle-aged, fat, and not adventurous. So would it be asking too much to have them NOT cast someone who's young, thin, and handsome?

I suppose so...

Eve is awesome, and its jsut sickening me all the hate she has from certain fans. *sigh*

I'm hoping for McAvoy, as I think he's a good actor and bears a resemblance to Elijah Wood, so I'd believe him as Frodo's uncle.

Do we really need a remake of "The Hobbit"? Wasn't the Rankin-Bass version good enough? I actually still have fond memories of that flick.

Unless the soundtrack features "The Greatest Adventure" by Glenn Yarbrough, I'm boycotting. Okay, maybe not.

Thanks for being honest about "The Hobbit". I read that in college and just hated the novel, though I do love the animated film. Go figure.

This is a great blog! I'm so glad my friend introduced me to it!

I'm glad others feel the same way about "The Hobbit." I thought I was alone on that one.

Michele, that's totally what I was thinking too. The man is too tall and skinny!

And Cara, you're right -- why can't they hire someone who more accurately fits the hobbit mold. Let's face it, there's tons of short stocky men out there...probably some with hairy feet too.

Jinx, I like Eve Myles, too. Don't always like Gwen Cooper but that's the writing, not the actress.

Aubin, maybe there'll be a Yarbrough re-mix??

Melanie, I'm glad you found us!! Thanks for reading!

For the record, The Hobbit is a wonderful book for what it is. It's a children's book. It's an amazing read when you're ten or eleven, but obviously suffers when you go back to it later in life. Read the first two Harry Potters and you'll feel the same way.

LOTR is much more grown up and should not be used as a metric for the worth of The Hobbit.

All that being said, Bilbo was a middle-aged hobbit when he went off with the dwarves. By the by, so was Frodo. I'd love to see Ian Holm play Bilbo again, if they could young him up just a bit.

As much as I love David Tennant, he is not Bilbo to me. They need to go with someone older and less attractive. I'm excited about new The Hobbit movie; I just hope it's as good as the LOTR.
