News of the Day - Monday, Feb 18

+ You know how we're all sure James Lipton is going to run out of real actors to interview on Inside the Actor's Studio soon, and we're fairly certain he'll have to resort to puppets? Well, NPR beat him to it. Check out this great interview with Cookie Monster that includes Lipton's fancy French question list. You'll never guess what Cookie Monster's favorite curse word is.

+ It's been out a few days now, but if you haven't seen the new trailer for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, you've got to check it out. I'm very excited for this movie -- and surprisingly, Harrison Ford seems mildly excited to be on screen, too. Who knew?

+ And finally, here's an interesting article on how some Michigan libraries are now renting video games and hosting Guitar Hero competitions to get kids in the door. Sure, they're still not reading, but at least they know where the library actually is now, so that's a start.

Actually, gaming in libraries is a pretty big thing right now. I'm a teen librarian in Texas and that's the state-wide theme of our summer reading program for this year: Game On! Texas Teens Read '08.

It's done with several goals in mind (information literacy definitely being one of them), but most importantly just to create a safe, fun space for teens in the library. Public libraries in particular have always been into supporting the community's recreational needs along with their educational and cultural ones.

So we'll see what kind of lasting effects, if any, it has on this generation of learners/readers ;)

But in the meantime I get to play Nintendo with a bunch of teens at work!

Well, at first I thought Indiana Jones reminded me of artically air-conditioned rooms but now I'm thinking it's just that the music gives me the chills.

Hoolia goolia, that's really, really cool. I never knew that libraries were doing this. I think it's a great idea. And way to go playing Nintendo at work! :-)

Mickie, I think Harrison Ford's finely aged hotness will take the chill off.

Actually, I know at least one nerdy girl who digs Indiana because he's buff and smart.

There's nothing not to love about Indy. Double negatives be damned!
