Monday Odds & Ends: "Lost," "Paul," and small fluffy animals

+ In "Lost" news, it's apparently been confirmed that the show's sixth and last season will be 18 hours long including a two-hour season premiere and a two-hour finale. Eighteen hours seems kind of short to me but I'd rather they do that than pad anything.

+ I'm so looking forward to "Paul," the new film from former Nerd Men of the Month Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. It's about two British geeks who drive across the U.S. to Comic-Con...and run into some, er, alien issues along the way. They've released some behind the scenes videos including the one below with them and Kristin Wiig learning to drive an RV:

+ Speaking of potentially very entertaining flicks, here's a preview for Ricky Gervais' "The Invention of Lying" about a man who, quite literally, invents lying. The cast includes Gervais, Jennifer Garner, Rob Lowe and Tina Fey.

+ Did you know it's been 411 years since the invention of the toothbrush? Neither did I until Wired gave me the skinny. Here's a fascinating run-down of oral hygiene. No, really, it's pretty interesting and sort of makes you want to floss immediately.

+ Geek Girl Diva has an entertaining male response to our "How To Meet and Woo a Nerdy Girl" from last week.

+ Liquid water found on one of Saturn's moons? Sure looks that way. The evidence? Water wings and half a bikini found at the country club. Nah, just kidding, it involves salt and science. Thanks to Angela for sharing this.

+ And finally, here's a heavy dose of cute to get your morning started. Baby lynxes -- that's all I'm saying.

I think 18 hours is longer than the previous 2 seasons of LOST, though. Part of the deal the creators made with ABC during the Writers' Strike was to have shorter seasons in exchange for a guaranteed time-slot so they could finish their narrative.

I think it's well worth it, personally. All it's amounted to so far is a few corners cut regarding side-plots (such as Hurley and Sawyer as roommates in Dharmaville), and as much as I'd have loved to see that kind of thing evolve, not having the show cancelled for plummeting ratings is more important.

I think you're right. I'd much rather have them do it this way rather than pad things or just drag it out for the sake of filling a season.

Words cannot describe how much I <3 Simon Pegg.

Spaced is still one of the best comedy series I've ever seen.

I'm a bit confused about the "how to maintain a geek male" article...who is it targeted to? I was especially puzzled at the movie reference -- when they were advising us not to drag a guy to chick flicks, I just was thinking, "why would I be going to a chick flick in the first place?"

Seriously. I blew my last boyfriend's mind when he meekly asked if I wouldn't mind going to see IRON MAN with him, and he promised he'd see something else I wanted to next time, but would it be a problem if -- and he was surprised when I said "dude, I TOTALLY want to see IRON MAN anyway, what are you talking about?"

@queencallipygos: That kind of situation happens quite a lot, actually. My girlfriend and I argued over Batman vs. Superman (and still do!) on our very first date, and she was the one dragging me to see the new X-Files movie. Not that either of us minds a good chick flick, but the term is a misnomer in a lot of circles these days.

Regarding Lost, as I recall they said back in 2007 that they would have three more seasons of 16 episodes each. I assume they have it all planned out and this will be a brilliantly executed and awesome final season (please please please!).

I'm psyched about Paul, too. I also wrote a paragraph about it in my own sort of odds and ends post earlier in the month. Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Kristen Wiig, Seth Rogan, Jason Bateman, Bill Hader, and Jane Lynch--it's basically my dream cast for a comedy. And its geeky theme makes it all the more promising.

Also, that baby lynx is too too too too cute!
