News of the Day -- March 12, 2008

+ Congratulations to Scrap Irony, winner of The Park Bench's first ever giveaway! Scrap chose the number 79 which was closest without going over to the husband's number of 81, which sadly did not relate to anything nerdy. Please e-mail me, Scrap, at editors at theparkbenchonline dot com and I'll get the Appleseed DVD in the mail for you. Thank you to everyone who played along. Hopefully I'll have more stuff to give away in the future.

+ And now on to the news of the day. Yahoo ran a disconcerting and insulting (I'm shocked, I tell you, shocked!) photo essay yesterday in which the girls of "Beauty and the Geek" were transformed into "nerds." Which was kind of equivalent to putting glasses on a sheepdog and calling him Einstein, but whatever.

+ Who says the quiet girls can't have fun...and by fun, I mean engage in self-destructive behavior just like Britney? It came out yesterday that Dawn Wells, Mary Ann from "Gilligan's Island," got caught for pot possession in late February. She was sentenced to five days in jail, fined $410.50 and placed on probation after pleading guilty to one count of reckless driving. Dawn Wells is now the owner of my favorite celebrity mug shot ever:

She's so cheerful! Ten bucks the booking officer asked her to make him a coconut cream pie...

+ An all-star cast has been revealed for Dreamworks' upcoming animated feature, "Monsters vs. Aliens," which will be the first film produced in Ultimate 3-D technology. The cast includes Reese Witherspoon, Hugh Laurie, Will Arnett, Seth Rogan, Rainn Wilson, Stephen Colbert, Kiefer Sutherland ("Dammit, there's no time! Hand me my man-purse!") and Paul Rudd. Too bad it's going to be animated. I'd love to see Paul Rudd in Ultimate 3-D. Le rowrrrr.

I am so confused by the Beauty and the Geek "makeovers". Geeky girls have bad skin? Wear pearls? And sport shoddy prosthetic noses? *sigh* Thanks for reminding me why I avoid "reality" TV.

Wow, that Beauty vs the Geek thing enrages me! Who knew that all nerds have big noses, bad skin, and glasses? I mean okay I'll buy the glasses, but UGH.

I was really angry when I saw that. It was just the most ridiculous thing I've seen in years. If I ever meet Ashton Kutcher, I'm definitely kneeing him in the groin. I may have to get a ladder to do it, but I think it'll be worth the effort...

We ran into some of the guys from last season's Beauty and the Geek at John Harvard's in Boston last weekend. One of the people with us watched the show, knew who they were, and wanted to say hello, so we did.

I took a certain glee in our table's cheerful out-geekage of those poor guys. They did a bit of fan-boying once the introductions went around. They may be geeks, but we're *professional* geeks, dammit. ;-)

That said, the show is pretty appalling. I can't imagine wanting to go on it, knowing the show will make you out to fit every stereotype out there.

Yeah, what everyone else said about the geek thing. Apparently, we never brush our hair, either.

Dawn Wells: "Now you can call me Mary Jane."

WTF???

Wait, geeks have no fashion sense at all, bad skin, don't know how to fix their hair and glasses?

Ok, I'll give you the glasses (sometimes) but what? Sure, my fashion and hair choices may be more low-maintenance/eclectic than trendy, but seriously? That's just insulting.

Where's Ashton Kutcher? I'm gonna kick his ass.

I agree with everyone else.

According to American TV, if a woman is smart and independent, she is probably ugly.

None of you saw the fourth season with the geek girl?

What is it with the glasses? Glasses are HOT, regardless of what Dorothy Parker said.

Oh, and $10 says the booking officer had never heard of Gilligan's Island, much less Mary Anne.
