Nominations for Nerd Man of the Month

To hell with the presidential election, we've got important stuff to attend to! Yup, it's Nerd Man of the Month time again and it's time to make your nominations. Who would you like to see as April's Nerd Man of the Month? (Or "Mr. Springtime Buttercup Pants," as I'm thinking of calling him.)

Nominate the gentleman (or gentlemen) of your choice, and we'll put the top contenders up for vote early next week.

I'll kick things off with my nomination for The Daily Show's John Oliver. Who's next?

I think Ben Folds should be nominated. I love him, he plays Nerd Rock, and he was the first artist to do a concert on My Space.

Kevin Smith? Has he ever been nominated? Surely he counts.

Gotta nominate Patrick Stewart after is stellar defence of Star Trek Fans!

I'd like to offer up Jad Abumrad of WNYC's Radiolab. A bit obscure, but full of dreamy-nerdy-goodness.

How about Richard Ayoade from The Mighty Boosh and The IT Crowd? His IT Crowd character's a huge nerd, and RA himself studied at Cambridge. I lurve him.

I second Patrick Stewart. Sexy bald Captains for the win!

Kirstin, Joss was actually our first ever Nerd Man of the Month.

oh. Ira Glass is a good one too. Don't make me choose between Ben Folds, Ira Glass and Patrick Stewart. That would be just too mean.

David Tennant or John Barrowman.

Gotta love Dr. Who and Torchwood.

(P.S. - This is my first comment. I adore the blog, and revel in the fact that there are other girl nerds out there!)

In a fit of nerdity, I would have to nominate Randall Munroe, the guy who writes xkcd (http://xkcd.com/) He's a physicist with a romantic heart and a terribly geeky sense of humor. Like heather suggestion, a bit obscure, but full of nerdy goodness... sounds like a Cadbury creme egg...

Anthony Bourdain. Food nerd!

I second This American Life's Ira Glass. he is so nerdy, but soooo adorable!

Also Kevin Smith deserves a shot, he might be chubby, but who doesn't want to have dinner with him and pick his brain and talk stupid shit with him? honestly?

Don't worry, Mandyu, I'll throw some bad choices in there just to mix things up. :-)

Mandy Ann Murray, thanks for posting. I'm glad you found us!

Ben Folds and Ira Glass both sound like excellent suggestions to me.

Jamie Oliver, who somehow made me WANT to deep fry a PIGEON!

I second the nomination of Radiolab"s Jad Abumrad. I love that man's voice.

Ira Glass would be excellent as well.

I'm way indecisive, so I'll add to the legions crying for the nomination of David Tennant, John Barrowman, Kevin Smith, and Ira Glass!
I guess I'd choose Kevin Smith if I had to choose one.
*cringe* Also maybe this is weird, but I really want to nominate Dwight Schrute. Just for sticking up for Battlestar Galactica so long and hard.

What about some of those cute writers from Lost which has been the best season yet? Damon Lindelof, Carlton Cuse, Drew Goddard (Buffy writer too), Brian K. Vaughn (also big comic writer), Edward Kitsis, and Adam Horowitz (both of these guys wrote the fantastic Ji Yeon episode that made America cry, JIN!). Any of these fine men would be incredibly awesome. Hell, you can just dedicate the entire month to The Writers of Lost (and I know there are a handful of lady scribes as well).

I'd like to second David Tennant with new Who in two weeks I'm missing my lovely Doctor. Or how about Adam Baldwin? I know he lost the last poll but come on, who can say no to that face?

Anonymous said...

Um, can I post a new contender?
How 'bout Adam Savage from Myth Busters? Those glasses, the red hair... weeeeee

A delicious nerdy duo -- Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie from "Flight of the Conchords." Please! Any two men who can incorporate a "binary solo" into one of their songs ("The Humans are Dead") deserve this nomination.

I meant to nominate David Tennant last month, but I think it's actually more appropriate for April, since Doctor Who returns to the BBC on Saturday (and will follow on Sci-Fi in a mere two weeks, hooray!) AND he's taking six months to do Shakespeare with the RSC this summer.

Let's face it, theatre doesn't get much nerdier than playing Hamlet, does it?

I know I originally nominated Patrick Stewart (and I stand by that nomination!) but seeing how many people would also vote for David Tennant (le nerdy sigh...) and Captain Jack Harkness, I'd have to give a big thumbs up to them as well! Can't wait for new Dr. Who and this season of Torchwood has been spectacular!!

I'm well-documented as VERY pro-John Oliver.

But someone mentioned Myth Busters and red hair and I...oh! Swoon!

Chewbob said...

Oh, man, I have to second the Adam Savage nomination. He needs to be Nerd Man of the Month, if not this month than SOME month!

Ooh, I've gotta second the LOST writers' nomination. Carlton Cuse is nice-looking AND he has that great radio/please-read-me-a-story voice (also, I love his laugh. The man GIGGLES). And Adam Horowitz (and I suppose Eddie Kitsis as well)? Totally cute and nerdy.

But I also dig Ira Glass. Or what about Alan Ruck, who played him on TV?

Anonymous said...

Definitely David Tennant-those eyes are killer- not to mention his appearance on `Weakest Link` was more adorable than K9`s puppy pics.

Neil Gaiman!

Oh, that girl again... said...

Dylan Moran - a surly, drunken book nerd (well his character Bernard Black was anyway). Not to mention the best part of Run Fatboy, Run.

Although I support the nominations of the Conchords & Patrick Stewart as well.

Unknown said...

The Conchords have already been Nerd Men of the Month, right? Oneof the reaons I thought that Liz was a woman of fine & discerning taste. Since Krasinski took the win last month, I say Adam Baldwin.

Trey said...

Ilana- excellent suggestion! Neil Giaman would make a great nerd man of the month.

How about Neil Patrick Harris, Vin Diesel, or Wil Wheaton?

Kevin Smith should be a Nerd Man of the Month at some point to - his Nerdery is the stuff of legend. He makes movies, owns a comic book store, and has written a wide variety of things.

Aaron Sorkin will have a little nerdy place in my heart for all time because of the West Wing. Hrm...Toby and Josh....Mmmmm.....

Ok, I realize that I probably used up my votes for the next six months with my previous comment (*points up*) but I heard something the other day on NPR that has made me change my vote completely.

Peter Sagal, the host of Wait Wait Don't Tell Me (whose voice I've always had a slight crush on) had a really excellent piece of social commentary in his scathing review of Horton Hears a Who. You can listen to it here:
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=89318829

The fact that he's consistently so entertaining on that NPR show, then comes out with something like this...I think he does The Park Bench proud!

I love Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me, and you're right about Peter Segal. He's hilarious.
